Designing Public Parenting Services

What services and supports are available in the society we live in to help raise our children?

Public services include a variety of fields that are essential to our daily lives. Among them, we are conducting research on parenting support using the design method. We focus on how people use the services provided by the public sector, for example, the city, and we try to understand the services from the perspective of the citizens. We work with citizens and municipalities to think about what is needed and research the process of co-design.

Our objective is to support the public actors to deliver public parenting services to people who need them in order to contribute to SDGs (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals) goal 3, “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages,” with design.

To date, we have worked with municipalities in Japan to conduct various activities including interviews with pregnant and parents, field surveys on child care services, and various design workshops for municipal officials and citizen dialogue.

Based on the results of these surveys, a number of designs, developed with administrative staff,  have been implemented, including a tool for parenting services and an experience design for infant health checkups.

In considering the public parenting service in Japan, it is important to compare it with precedent cases in other countries. How are the public parenting services conducted overseas?

We are now conducting a survey in Finland, to get a comparative perspective on how public sector parenting services are supporting people in these two countries. This research is jointly conducted by Kyushu University and Aalto University.

The following three tools are used for the survey in Finland.
・Questionnaire: describe the attribute and circumstance of a respondent
・Stakeholder map: describe the people and institutions related to the respondent’s parenting
・Event timeline: describe the services used and parenting experience

If you have recently used parenting services in Finland, we would like to ask you to support our research and give us your interview!

If you are:
・living in Finland (required) and
・pregnant or currently have a pregnant partner, or
・currently raising preschoolers (0-6 years old), or
・have brought up preschooler within the past 5 years
you can join the research. We can include about 10 participants.

Survey flow
1. You will receive a survey kit containing the above 3 tools by mail.
2. After filling in, please put it in the reply envelope and reply to the research team.
3. An online interview in English will be conducted for 1 to 2 hours based on the information entered. In the interview, we will ask you more details about the information you wrote in the tools you sent to us and ask you to tell us more about your own parenting experience.
4. We will inform you of the survey result after totaling.

Survey period
July 1 – 31, 2020

We are looking for parents from Finland to participate in the survey.
If you are interested in participating in the survey, please contact us!
